Frank,

Good commentary ! The only thing I've heard about cycle vs. car oils is that cycle oils have additives specific to bikes for the clutch plates and trans gears. Cars differ in that the gearbox and differential are separate, hence heavier oils, so the only thing car oil has to do is lube the engine parts, not gears and clutches. Apparently gears have a "mashing" effect on oil molecules which happens more quickly than normal bearing/cam/rod surfaces etc., and the cycle oils are "supposed" to help this. Also, the clutch plates are "supposed" to engage and disengage better with bike oil additives specifically designed for them. I've also heard that oil never really breaks down, it just gets dirty and looses its ability to lube when overloaded with engine grime and combustion by-products. This was told to me by a tech rep from Quaker State.

I still use "real" oil, though I've been tempted to try synthetics for their "supposed" superior qualities, but I'm too wimpy to take the plunge as yet so the only oil that goes in the filler hole is Honda 20w-50. For the miles I put on in a summer season (1500+-), the extra few bucks per quart is OK with me for peace of mind, whether that peace is warranted or not. Or, I might be full of s--t, too !

Overall, your opinion that no matter what oil is used the level and cleanliness and timely changing is most important is right on the money !

Tim
